Sami Zayn has opened up on his current WWE SmackDown run, believing he has not yet ‘fully’ turned heel on television.

Over the past few weeks, Sami Zayn and Trick Williams have begun undergoing a double turn on WWE SmackDown, with Sami’s reactions from the crowd worsening following his victory over Carmelo Hayes for the United States Championship.

On last week’s show, Sami attacked and ‘murdered’ the Gingerbread Man on the show, which was seen by many as his official heel turn, but Sami himself believes that not to be the case.

Sami Zayn Doesn’t Believe He Has ‘Fully’ Turned Heel

Speaking to the Toronto Sun, Sami disagreed with the notion that he has fully turned heel, and that there is still a ‘ways to go’.

“I’ll disagree with your statement that I’ve fully turned heel here, I don’t think I have. I’m trying to play this one a little different, because this one is kind of different, we’re kind of riding these reactions which are different week to week.

“I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box, that would split the audience a little bit, but sometimes things just don’t work out exactly how you envision it. Sometimes you think you’re going to be somewhere on the timeline and you’re not. Maybe I’m being a little vague here about it.

“All this to say, I still think there’s a ways to go, and it could still go in a number of different ways, which I find very interesting and kind of refreshing. Although to be fair, if you kick a mannequin Gingerbread Man below the belt, I know that will upset some people, because people want to have fun.”

The Differences In Portraying A Babyface & Heel In WWE

Sami would then go on to elaborate on his mentally between playing a babyface and a heel in WWE, and how he plays off his real world experiences to work them into the character.

He said:

“I spent the majority of my career as a good guy, and I know what I want out of my bad guys. I sometimes think we overthink things, in terms of what makes a good guy or a bad guy, you have to look at yourself; what do you value in people, and what qualities do you not like in people?

“I don’t think it has to be much more complicated than that, because there are certain qualities that are universally viewed as admirable, and qualities that are deemed detestable, and if you just look inward, a lot of time it matches, not only how you feel, but how other people feel too.

“So if you just think of ‘what do I not like about people, what really drives me crazy’, and you do what you can to embody that. “But from a more technical aspect, I know when I work as a good guy, what I like out of my bad guys, and vice versa, so I kind of keep that in mind.”
