Santos Escobar Wore WWE Legend’s Iconic Gear During Recent Match

Santos Escobar has confirmed that he wore the genuine gear of a WWE star and wrestling legend at NXT Halloween Havoc 2020.

At WCW Halloween Havoc 1997, Rey Mysterio wore his iconic purple skeleton attire for his match against Eddie Guerrero. When the event came to NXT last year, fans were quick to notice Santos Escobar’s homage to Mysterio, with the Cruiserweight Champion also sporting purple gear.

Escobar has revealed that his Halloween Havoc gear was more than a homage however, it was Mysterio’s actual gear from 1997.

Speaking with Sportskeeda, Escobar confirmed that he wanted to give a subtle nod to the famous luchador, however Rey Mysterio had other ideas.

“I called Rey and I asked him, ‘Rey, is there a chance that I could wear your wristbands for the match?’ And he said, ‘No. I’m going to send over the entire gear and if it fits wear it.’ I think to me, it was an opportunity to pay homage to the two guys that put the Mexican Cruiserweight Division on the map and that set the tone for what happened years later and two decades later,”

Mysterio has always been a big advocate for the next generation of Mexican luchadors. Passing his iconic gear down to Escobar for NXT Halloween Havoc proves that the master of the 619 believes Escobar to be the future of lucha libre.

Santos Escobar last defended his Cruiserweight Championship at Halloween Havoc against Gran Metalik. With the backing of Rey Mysterio, the future looks bright for Escobar in WWE.
