An AEW star has critiqued their debut promo in the company.
At AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2022, Saraya made her debut with All Elite Wrestling after leaving WWE following the expiration of her WWE contract.
The following week, the former Paige cut her first promo in the promotion live in the ring.
Speaking with Busted Open Radio, Saraya discussed how she felt when she first came to AEW. She said:
“It took me a minute to really get my confidence back, honestly, because I was out for a very long time. Wrestling is ever-evolving and ever-changing. Everything just feels so different. Then obviously going into a different company too, it just felt like I was going into a new high school.”
“I didn’t know anybody. I just felt very misplaced at the beginning. I didn’t have my confidence at all. I was coming back in and I’m like, ‘Man, I need to learn how to wrestle again. I need to learn all these new things because there’s so many new moves and stuff like that.'”
“The structure of the wrestling matches in AEW is a little bit different, so it’s just a learning curve. But now I feel like I’m starting to get in the swing of things and getting more confident within myself.”
“Once I had that triple threat, I felt really good. like. I felt confident after that. I was like, ‘Okay, I can do it and I’m going to continue to do it.'”
On the first promo she delivered in the company, the AEW star said:
“I was stuttering and nervous. I was like, ‘Oh no. This is awful.’ But then at the same time when I was coming in, I was like, I love being a bad guy. I feel it’s easier to get people to hate you than to get people to like you.”
“It’s so much easier because people do have a lot right these days. So I wanted to come across more like, ‘Is she a good guy or is she a bad guy?'”
“But just the way I delivered it, it wasn’t my proudest promo that I’ve ever done. I was like, okay, if I have to have another promo, which I ended up having with Britt, I need to redeem myself somehow.”
Saraya continued on to revealed that top AEW star Jon Moxley worked with her to help improve her promos, saying:
“Moxley helped a lot with these promos, and so with that one, he was like, ‘You should just speak from the heart. Stop trying to plan a promo out of your head. Just speak from experience and this is more personal. You want to be more personal about it.”
“Without taking low blow jabs, which are the cheap pops that you can get, he was like, ‘No, you should go in there and just be like, I’m a star and this is the reason why.'”
“But then it was kind of like, who’s the babyface and who’s the heel between me and Britt and then we kind of decided it doesn’t matter. We don’t have to have a definitive baby face and heel.”
