An AEW star has revealed scrapped plans for he and his former partner to win the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
Signing with AEW upon its inception in 2019, Ortiz and Santana were a heavily featured act during the company’s early years, becoming key members of inaugural AEW World Champion Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle faction.
Despite facing off against the likes of The Young Bucks, Jurassic Express and Private Party to name a few, they never took on former AEW World Tag Team Champions the Lucha Brothers (Rey Fenix & Penta).
During a recent appearance on the Wombreezy podcast, Ortiz shared insight into scrapped plans for a match against the now WWE stars, reflecting on being in the ring with the renowned Mexican tag team and the Young Bucks, saying:
“For sure. Super surreal. And, obviously, we have a relationship with the Lucha Bros. We wrestled them so much, so there’s so much respect there with them, and also just genuine friendship.
“And, then the Young Bucks are just super cool dudes and ‘the men’ when it comes to that style of tag team wrestling. They can do it all, honestly. I’ve seen them do it all. Just top tier.
“So, to be in there with them and to be the third team among them was definitely awesome. It was a big moment for sure.”

They wouldn’t have a match against the Lucha Brothers in AEW, with Ortiz sharing that it was something that was set to take place, stating:
“It’s a shame we never got to wrestle the Lucha Bros in AEW. It’s unreal to me that it just never happened. It was supposed to happen. Things beyond our control kind of took it.
“I truly believe that in the short timespan that I left Impact, also because I changed my fitness level, I changed my mindset on wrestling. I just became a different performer throughout that time. Just knowing what I can implement now, oh man, just magic would happen with the Lucha Bros at this moment.
“But, they’re off doing other things, unfortunately. That’s just how life works sometimes.”

However, that wasn’t those weren’t the only plans that didn’t come to fruition during Santana and Ortiz’s AEW tag run, with the pairing also originally set to win the AEW World Tag Team Champions on more than one occasion, explaining:
“It was supposed to happen a couple of times, but due to certain circumstances, it just didn’t happen. Some out of our control, you know what I mean? Especially the first time. Fate kind of took it another way.
“And, honestly, that’s a true story. There were plans to put the titles on us, but it didn’t work out that way.”

During the interview, Ortiz would reveal that he has been working in a backstage capacity as a producer in AEW during his absence from in-ring action.
