Hall of Famer and former Head WWE Writer ‘Road Dogg’ Brian James has revealed the pitch that nearly ended KofiMania.
Ahead of Elimination Chamber 2019, the competitors set to compete in the WWE Championship chamber match faced off in a gauntlet bout on the February 12 edition of SmackDown.
During the gauntlet bout, fans got behind Kofi Kingston, sparking the ‘KofiMania’ fan revolution. This led to Kingston winning the WWE Championship from Daniel Bryan (Bryan Danielson) at WrestleMania 35 in an amazing moment.
Kingston had notably replaced an injured Mustafa Ali in the gauntlet and Elimination Chamber bouts. Speaking on Sportskeeda’s The Wrestling Outlaws podcast, Brian James revealed that he actually pitched for Big E to be pushed at this time, noting:
“Truth be told, I pitched Big E being ‘the guy’ just because I love Big E, his character — he’s a big guy so he’s a believable character.”
Kingston ultimately held the WWE Championship for 180 days before dropping the title to Brock Lesnar in a matter of seconds on the October 4, 2019 episode of SmackDown.
Big E went on to win the WWE Title in September 2021 before losing the gold at WWE Day 1 2022, also to Brock Lesnar.
