WWE held it’s latest round of talent cuts on September 21, which saw many names from both the main roster and NXT released from their contracts.
While most of the names released had not appeared on television in recent months, one name who was a regular on WWE television was Mustafa Ali, who was working for the NXT brand at the time of his release.
Not only was Ali working for NXT, he was scheduled to face Dominik Mysterio for the North American Championship at NXT No Mercy this Saturday.
Speaking on the media call for the show, Shawn Michaels discussed Ali’s release, noting that he was also taken by surprise by Ali’s release due to him being booked for No Mercy.
He said:
“I found out right before he did. I will say this, I’d be lying to you if I said it didn’t take us by surprise. That’s one thing I’m learning here is that main roster and NXT are totally separate rosters.
“I think the world of Mustafa, had a great working relationship with him in the time that he was here, I will miss him. That’s what we do here in NXT. We adjust. The fire drill is something that is a regular thing here in the WWE and certainly here at NXT. I feel we made a great pivot, we adjusted, and he’s an unbelievably creative and talented young man and no doubt his future looks incredibly bright and he’ll be successful.
“I’m going to miss him and I enjoyed working with him for the time that I did have him here. Now, Trick Williams is the beneficiary of that, and he has the biggest match of his life at No Mercy.”
Ali’s replacement was announced on this week’s NXT show, when Trick Williams won a four-way to earn the shot at Dominik’s title at No Mercy.
Michaels also discussed potentially working with Jade Cargill in NXT following her WWE signing, which you can read here.
