WWE fans were left buzzing after this week’s episode of SmackDown, when WWE announced the first-ever SmackDown World Cup.
The tournament, set to begin next week, will pit 8 of SmackDown’s top stars against each other.
While we do not yet know any of the participants in the tournament, it would make sense that the announced match between Santos Escobar and Shinsuke Nakamura would be a part of the tournament.
Despite the tournament drumming up excitement, the reward for the winner was not officially announced on the show.
Well, per WWE.com’s announcement on the tournament, the winner of the SmackDown World Cup will earn a shot at Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship.
The official WWE.com announcement reads as followed:
With the FIFA World Cup due to start this month, WWE will host a World Cup tournament of its own! The SmackDown World Cup on FOX will begin next week with an array of international Superstars due to take part.
The winner of the tournament will receive an Intercontinental Championship Match against Gunther, so the stakes are extremely high.
Who will emulate soccer powerhouses like Germany, Brazil and Italy in their effort to become the first-ever SmackDown World Cup winner? Find out next week at 8/7 C on FOX!
Gunther retained his title in the main event of this week’s show, defeating Rey Mysterio in a great match.
