Sonya Deville Explains How She Became An Authority Figure

Sonya Deville made her return to WWE back in January of this year after losing a ‘Loser leaves WWE’ match to Mandy Rose back at SummerSlam 2020. Sonya returned as an on-screen authority figure for the company.

Deville, alongside Adam Pearce, have been calling the shots on the show for most of the year, which is a vast difference from when Deville was putting her hair up and squaring up in the ring.

Sonya recently spoke to the UK Metro, where she explained how this transition from wrestler to WWE official came to be. She explained:

“It was actually a conversation with Vince where I was in his office. We were talking about how I was gonna re-debut and I just kind of mentioned to him that I had these three-piece suits that I’d been waiting to wear on TV and that I thought a cool part of my character could be that I rock lady suits and I’m kind of a bad B, and I could be a boss.”

Sonya continued on, explaining how she didn’t consider the role of authority figure when she pitched the idea to wear the suits on television. She added:

“I wasn’t speaking literally, but (Vince McMahon) kind of sat there and envisioned what I was saying with the suits. He was like, ‘Do you have one on you?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I have my all-black one but it’s at my hotel.’

“He’s like, ‘We’ll send someone to go get it,’ next thing you know, I was walking down the hallway in a three-piece suit. I didn’t know where it was going, and it just organically evolved from there.”

Deville added that she believes that the transition to an on-screen authority figure is proof of Vince McMahon’s creative genius.

She said:

“I think he’s so genius and so creative that I think me saying I wanted to wear suits, the wheels started spinning and this is where we ended up.”

Sonya has “wrestled” one match since her return to WWE television, a two-on-one Handicap match with herself and Shayna Baszler defeating Naomi. Sonya is advertised to go one-on-one with Naomi once again on tonight’s (December 10) SmackDown.
