It was announced on last night’s NXT taping that Adam Cole (bay bay) would be heading to NXT TakeOver: New York to face Johnny Gargano in a 2-out-of-3-falls match for the newly vacated NXT Championship.
The match was made after Tommaso Ciampa was forced to vacate the title after undergoing surgery for a serious neck injury which could see him miss up to a year in the ring.
A fatal-5-way match was made between Cole, Ricochet, Aleister Black, Matt Riddle and Velveteen Dream which ended in Cole pinning Ricochet to become the number one contender alongside Gargano.
Wrestling Inc are reporting that one of their readers has spotted an advertisement for an NXT Live Event on April 28 in Minnesota which lists a champion vs champion match for the show. The champions in question are Adam Cole and Velveteen Dream, which could suggest Cole will walk out of New York as the new champion.
If accurate, it would also mean that Velveteen Dream will overcome Matt Riddle in their match for the North America Championship.
It is thought that the plan is still for Gargano to be called up to the main roster, but while Ciampa is on the injury table, the main roster may not be the best place for him if there is no plan in place for him as a singles competitor.
