Spoiler On AEW Women’s Championship Plans

Spoiler On AEW Women’s Championship Plans

In the wake of Dynamite last night, more information is now known about future plans for the AEW Women’s Championship.

This week, Tay Conti scored a huge victory over Nyla Rose. According to a new report, AEW are building towards a title match between Conti and Hikaru Shida.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed how AEW are booking their women’s division. Pointing out that the promotion books long term stories, Meltzer noted that Conti is the frontrunner to receive a big AEW Women’s Championship match.

Here is the full quote:

“They don’t book every week, they book long-term. And obviously, number one, they’re building for the tag match next week, which is Tay Conti and Hikaru Shida against Bunny and Nyla, and eventually they’re gonna get to Shida vs Tay Conti.

“So since they’re going to Shida vs Tay Conti, unlike with WWE where the idea is to get somebody over you keep beating them, because that’s how you get a babyface over (sarcasm), in AEW when you’re building for a title match, I’m sure there are gonna be exceptions, because there always are, it’s pro-wrestling, but as a general rule in AEW if you’re on the way to a championship match, you’re usually gonna have a winning streak going into it.”

Since July 2020, Conti has been rising through the ranks of the AEW women’s division. Only losing twice since the beginning of 2021, Conti is a strong contender to the top title. Hikaru Shida has been a dominant champion, not losing a single AEW match in the time since Conti joined the promotion.

Next week on Dynamite, Conti and Shida will team up to face Nyla Rose and Allie in tag team competition.
