Friday’s edition of SmackDown on FOX is being marketed as a big show, with the episode being billed as the brand’s ‘season premiere’.
While there has been some speculation about surprises WWE may have in store, it has now been revealed that a former Intercontinental Champion will be in the building for the show.
Per PWInsider, Wade Barrett is scheduled to be at this week’s SmackDown taping in Worcester. The report noted that while it hasn’t been confirmed, ‘numerous sources’ believe he will be calling SmackDown alongside Michael Cole.
Barrett has notably been an announcer for NXT since officially re-joining WWE in September 2020. Earlier this year, Barrett confirmed that he signed a two year contract extension with WWE.
Barrett hasn’t wrestled since April 2016, prior to his WWE release. In a recent interview, the former Intercontinental Champion stated that he would be willing to return to the ring if the right opportunity presents itself.
The appearances of several NXT stars could also be set for Friday’s show, which you can read more about right here.
