Those in positions of power in WWE love to talk about talent seizing opportunity. The “grab the brass ring” sentiment is overdone but it illustrates how they talk about their talent while seemingly taking away opportunities from stars who do just that like Zack Ryder. Now, Stephanie McMahon has doubled down on this.
Last week, Vince McMahon told talent they would no longer be allowed to use third-party platforms. This includes things like Twitch and Cameo. However, in a recent interview with Gary Vee, Stephanie McMahon said WWE stars have more of an opportunity to grow their brand than anybody. In fairness, she said this back in July before the ban came about. Here is the quote, courtesy of Fightful:
“Steve Austin tells this story of standing at the curtain and was watching somebody and he looked over at Vince at said, ‘You should really that kid a push, they’ve got something.’ My dad looked back and said, ‘All I can provide is the opportunity, the rest is up to him.’ Austin said that’s when the lightbulb went off for him. ‘Oh, this is really about me and my ability to listen and grow my brand.’ The talent we have today have more of an opportunity than anybody because of social media because they recognize the opportunity to build their own brand and their own voice inside and outside the ring. The more people engaged with you as a person, the more they want to see you perform (in WWE).”
Many in WWE have been said to be upset by the recent third-party ban. It has been a way for stars to make additional income and promote themselves during the pandemic.
