One of the first people to get their own custom championship belt was ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. He introduced the ‘Smoking Skull’ belt in 1998 after beating Kane on the June 29th episode of Raw to win the WWE Championship.
Now, Austin has opened up about the locker room reaction to him getting his own belt. While he said he could have people could have reacted poorly, he said that was not the case. Here is the quote from his interview with Sam Roberts, courtesy of Fightful:
“It was special. When you get that belt, it’s not about you being bigger than the business, because you’re not, but it’s pretty special and unique and doesn’t happen often, and it was accepted. The rest of the guys in the locker room, you care what they think, ‘this guy has really turned into an asshole, he’s got his own belt.’ You don’t want that. I don’t think anybody thought that.”
Other people have gotten custom title belts in the years since. While The Rock’s Brahma Bull title never made it to TV, John Cena and Edge’s custom belts did.
