Former WCW star Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael has sadly passed away at age 68 after being moved into hospice care earlier today.
McMichael had been battling ALS since 2021, and was hospitalized with sepsis and pneumonia in August 2023.
McMichael’s dream of being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame came true last year, when a bust of him was revealed by his family and friends at his home.
During his time in wrestling, Mongo had a notable run as a member of the Four Horsemen in WCW, with him being a former WCW United States Champion, as well as serving as a colour commentator for the promotion.
McMichael’s death was confirmed by Jarrett Payton, son of legendary NFL star Walter Payton, who was a former teammate of McMichael’s.
He wrote:
With deep sorrow, I share that Steve McMichael passed at 5:28 PM after a brave fight with #ALS, surrounded by loved ones. I’m grateful to have been with him in his final moments. Please keep Steve and his family your prayers. #Bears
We send our condolences to the family, friends and fans of Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael.
