Stone Cold Steve Austin says he recently checked in on a WWE star who’s been absent from the company for almost a year due to injury.
It has now almost been four years since Stone Cold Steve Austin came out of retirement to challenge Kevin Owens to an impromptu match in the main event of WrestleMania 38 – a return that stands as one of the most unlikely in WWE history given Austin’s 19 year absence from the ring and his history of neck injuries which caused him to call time on his career in 2003.
With Kevin Owens being absent from WWE for a year due to a serious neck injury, Austin was asked if he’s kept up with his former foe during an interview with The Takedown on SI.
Sharing his “love” for Owens, Austin said:
“I called Kevin a couple of months ago, I think he’s got a great doctor according to him and I threw out a name that I’d heard good things about. But yeah I care about the guy, love the guy, he’s a Hall of Fame talent.
“Don’t know how he banged his neck up but he took a lot of bumps. He did a lot of stuff. I remember meeting him in the airport 20-25 years ago and I’d seen him work and that’s what I told him, I said, ‘Hey kid, you don’t need to worry about all those fancy moves, you need to learn how to talk.’ And of course he did and he’s great. I’m not saying his style hurt his neck. It’s a rough business right?
“No matter what style you work, you’re going to take a bump and even the most simple bump can be the devastating bump, although it looks normal, that sets off some chain reaction, or is the straw that broke the camel’s back, so to speak, and there’s that injury. Injuries happen, I stay in touch with him a little bit and I wish him nothing but the best.”

“It Sucks” – Stone Cold Steve Austin Reflects On His Own Absence Following Neck Surgery
With Owens’ return date unclear after undergoing neck surgery last year, Austin reflected on his own struggles being away from the ring following his own broken neck in 1997.
Austin said:
“It sucks. Yeah man, you’re watching your buddies go out there. I remember when I got my neck fused up. I had to stop watching for a while because I was like, man, you know there’s nothing you can do and you’re frustrated.
“You want to get back out there, everybody else is thriving. Of course you want the business to be great, but you know, there’s that selfish part of you, that competitive part of you that’s like, ‘’Eh, I should be out there and I ain’t.’”
