Stone Cold Steve Austin has praised a WWE star for being “fearless” and pushing the creative envelope in the company.

Speaking to The Takedown on SI, Stone Cold Steve Austin was asked about the importance of taking chances as a pro wrestler, with the WWE Hall of Famer using his own ascent in the company as an example of how experimentation can allow stars to build greater connections with fans and get ahead:

“When I first started out, I’m in the small towns in that weekly territory and you’re with veteran, some of those veterans have been in there for 10-15 more years and you watch those people and you watch how they work and how much that crowd respects them and you’re an idiot when you first join the business, you just are, unless you’re Shawn Michaels and you kind of get it from day one.

“But when you’re starving and you’re making $15-$20 a night you realise that you better get good pretty quick and learn how to reach people on an emotional level. And/or on some type of level so you can start making some money so you can put some food in your mouth.

“So, it’s highly motivating to do that. But sometimes creative doesn’t put you in the best situations that you can be in. Sometimes we’d be out there on Monday Night Raw, or anytime there was cameras present, or when we went off the air I would do a lot of stuff in an adlib fashion to try let that crowd do something or experiment with the crowd. By taking chances I mean go out on a limb.

“When I started flipping people off and kind of using the language I used. Obviously I didn’t use George Carlin’s famous words that you can’t say on air. I was using two, three, four that I knew I could get away with. So, I was pushing the envelope in a way that wasn’t going to get me red flagged, it was yellow flags.”

Steve Austin Recalls Vince McMahon’s Attempts To Dissuade Him From Using The Middle Finger On TV

“I remember when I started doing the middle fingers, at the same time down there in WCW Dallas Page was doing the Diamond Cutter thing.

“I remember I was fixing to go out and Vince asked me, he goes, ‘Hey Steve, I see Dallas Page down there and he’s doing that Diamond Cutter sign that everybody does it with him,’ because he wasn’t fan of the middle fingers, he goes, ‘Is there something you could do that everybody could do with you?’ Because the middle fingers is kind of edgy.

“I just looked at him, I didn’t even hesitate, I said ‘No.’ I kept using the middle finger.”

Steve Austin Praises “Fearless” Chelsea Green

While Austin admitted that he doesn’t watch much of the current WWE product, he took the time to praise Chelsea Green, someone he believes pushes the envelope in order to separate herself on TV.

“Taking the chance and pushing the envelope just to be different. I think Chelsea Green does that a lot of times, she’s pretty fearless out there on a creative note. She’ll go for it and it’s done well for her. Sometimes you have to rise above creative, but do creative and.”
