Despite Stone Cold Steve Austin being one of the biggest names in wrestling history, the Attitude Era legend has revealed that he was often mistaken for Goldberg.
In their primes, Austin and Bill Goldberg shared a few similarities, namely a shaved head and a thick goatee. Stone Cold has revealed that even though the two wrestled for rival companies, he’d often get mistaken for the WCW icon.
Appearing on Bailey and the Southside, Austin noted that during the late 1990s, he’d often receive “Goldberg” chants when travelling, while the actual WCW competitor had gotten used to people calling him “Stone Cold”.
Here is the full quote, courtesy of Wrestling Inc:
“Well, when I was coming up and really starting to get hot in WWF back in the day, and Bill down in WCW, he started getting hot almost at the same time — boy, ‘Goldberg!’ chants. Bill is one of my best friends that I’ll call all the time.
I’d be going through airports, and people would yell, ‘Goldberg!’ He would be going through an airport. ‘Stone Cold!’ People got us confused all the time.”
“If you puts us side by side, Bill is a bigger guy than I am, but if you just see a bald-headed dude with a goatee and some sunglasses on, it’s pretty easy to get fooled by who it is.”
As Austin mentioned, both athletes were at the height of their careers around the same time, with Stone Cold and Goldberg regularly appearing on Raw is War and Monday Nitro respectively.
Goldberg and Austin never had a one-on-one face-off, however Stone Cold did referee Goldberg’s WrestleMania XX match against Brock Lesnar.
