History was made at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17 pay-per-view event earlier this month, when NJPW, AEW and WWE contracted talent all wrestled on the show.
WWE’s Karl Anderson defended ultimately lost his NEVER Openweight Championship to Tama Tonga on the show.
Anderson won the title prior to his and Luke Gallows’ WWE return back in October, with him verbally agreeing to the January 4 show.
With Anderson a member of the OC, considered WWE’s subsidiary of the Bullet Club, many had speculated whether the other members would make an appearance by his side.
AJ Styles, the group’s leader and former Bullet Club leader, broke his ankle shortly before the show, and has been out of action since, which ruled out any possibility of him appearing at Wrestle Kingdom.
However, per Fightful Select (subscription required), there were some talks regarding Styles coming over to Japan for the show. Rocky Romero spoke to Fightful’s Wrestling Perspective Podcast, saying that AJ himself thought it would be a cool idea, with Rocky saying that he believed, if it were up to Styles, he might have been there.
Luke Gallows also didn’t make the trip, which was said to have been an NJPW call.
Styles injuring his ankle the prior week ended any possibility of him appearing on the show, though Romero made sure to specify that there were never any official plans for him to appear.
