Tama Tonga is one of two active Bullet Club members to have lasted since the group’s inception. Since then he has seen many members and leaders come and go. One of which was AJ Styles.
In a recent interview with njpw1972.com, Tonga recalled what it was like to meet Styles in 2014. Here is the full quote:
“He was very grounded. Very humble, down to earth. He just got all of us together and said ‘however we can make this work, for all of us, let me know’. And I knew then that he was in it for all of us, for the whole group. We adapted with who we had, and it worked.”
He was also asked if he thought Karl Anderson would have stepped up as leader if Styles hadn’t made the jump to New Japan.
“That’s a tough question, honestly I don’t know. Anderson wouldn’t quite be the front guy. He’s like a second in command. A guy that keeps the group together in a common vision, but…”
Tama Tonga, Prince Devitt, Bad Luck Fale, and Karl Anderson founded Bullet Club in 2013. After a year, Devitt left to become Finn Balor in WWE and AJ Styles took his place as leader. This is where the group started to really gain steam as Styles won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship twice as leader.
Styles left New Japan for WWE in January 2016 and he was replaced as leader by Kenny Omega.
