The Rock Officially Closes Deal On XFL

It was announced a couple of weeks ago that The Rock was purchasing the XFL. There ended up being some controversy surrounding it but it appears all that has been put to rest.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson announced today on Twitter that the deal to purchase the XFL is officially closed. The announcement was accompanied by a promise to put in the work to continue to build the brand.

“The deal is officially closed and ‘the keys’ to the XFL have been handed over. I humbly accept and promise to put my callouses to hard work building our new brand. Congrats to my partners Dany Garcia & Gerry Cardinale and our sharp, hungry team. #XFLOwner #ForTheLoveOfFootball”

Barring legal setbacks, this news was expected sooner or later. In addition to Johnson being the figurehead of the league, Dany Garcia has become the first female owner of a professional sports league as a result of this deal. In case it needs stating, that is a monumental accomplishment.

The Rock has a history in football as hardcore fans know. He was a member of the National Champion Miami Hurricanes in the 90s before an injury derailed his career. He wasn’t drafted by the NFL and ended up playing for the CFL before being cut. This led to the start of his wrestling career.

As far as the XFL goes, many remember his promo on the field in 2001 during the original XFL season. Such involvement didn’t exist in the relaunch of the league, as Vince McMahon kept the XFL and the WWE separate.
