Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is reportedly set to star in an upcoming Martin Scorsese directed crime drama alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt.
After recent success with Red One and Moana 2, The Rock is reportedly set for one of the biggest roles of his acting career thus far.
According to Deadline, The Rock is set to star alongside Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt in an upcoming crime drama directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese.
The movie is yet to receive a title, but Deadline has revealed that the film is set in Hawaii during the 1960-1970s and is focused on a “ruthless” crime boss, based on a real person.
From Deadline:
“To be written by Nick Bilton, the film focuses on a turbulent time on the island paradise when an aspiring mob boss battled rival crime factions to wrest control of the underworld of the Hawaiian islands.
It was a bloody battle, the kind of terrain Scorsese covered in both Goodfellas and The Departed. In 1960s and 70s Hawaii, this formidable and charismatic mob boss rises to build the islands’ most powerful criminal empire, waging a brutal war against mainland corporations and rival syndicates while fighting to preserve his ancestral land.
It’s based on the untold true story of a man who fought to preserve his homeland through a ruthless quest for absolute power — igniting the last great American mob saga, where the war for cultural survival takes place in the unlikeliest of places: paradise.”
As well as starring in the film, The Rock is also listed as a producer alongside DiCaprio and Blunt.
Deadline’s report notes that it was The Rock and Blunt who pitched the idea to Scorsese and DiCaprio, and despite everyone involved currently being engaged in other projects Hollywood “quickly sparked” to the pitch and “multiple bids are on the table or are fast mobilizing”.
Despite a huge role in last year’s WWE WrestleMania 40 The Rock is reportedly not likely to compete at this year’s event in Las Vegas, with his last appearance on TV being the WWE Raw on Netflix premiere on January 6 and NXT New Year’s Evil the following night.
We will provide further updates on the upcoming movie project as well as The Rock’s future WWE plans as they become available.
