The Rock has commented on his impressive body transformation for The Smashing Machine, revealing how much muscle he put on for the role.
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the new Mark Kerr biopic starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, with Benny Safdie winning the Venice Film Festival’s Silver Lion Best Director award, and many speculating that The Rock could be in the Best Actor awards conversation come Oscar season.
Speaking on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, The Rock revealed that he put on 30 pounds of muscle to play the role of MMA legend Mark Kerr.
Noting that he still had to be able to move like a functional wrestler with this additional weight, Dwayne Johnson said:
“I had to put on just over 30 pounds of muscle.
I had to put on this weight and still be able to move like an MMA fighter, it was about 30 pounds.
Our writer – director Benny Safdie, he said to me ‘Hey DJ, I don’t know how to tell you this, and I don’t know if you’ve ever heard this, you’re gonna have to get bigger.’ I went ‘Okay, here we go.'”
