A big update has emerged on The Rock’s big project which could see him in the conversation for some major awards.
The Smashing Machine, the biopic of former wrestler and MMA artist Mark Kerr, led by WWE’s The Rock, has had its release date set.
Dwayne Johnson stars as Mark Kerr in the Benny Safdie written and directed movie that also stars Emily Blunt.
In May 2024, Johnson shared a first look at his portrayal of Kerr in a post on social media.
Deadline has now reported that the A24 production will get its theatrical release on October 3, 2025.
It was noted in the report that the release date announcement came after the Michael Jackson biopic “Michael” vacated its October release date.
The biopic will chart Kerr’s struggles with addiction along with his MMA career and features Blunt as his wife, Dawn Staples.
As Deadline notes, the movie follows Kerr “from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career as he questions himself and struggles with life and his relationships.”
Because of the nature of the biopic, The Rock’s transformation for his performance and the awards season release date, many have predicted that the Final Boss could be in the conversation for receiving major awards nominations.
Johnson and Blunt previously starred together in The Jungle Cruise, the 2021 Disney fantasy adventure movie.
It was recently reported that Johnson’s upcoming movie, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, has been picked up by Disney’s 20th Century Studios.
Meanwhile, in WWE, Drew McIntyre has spoken about the relationship he shares with The Rock.
