A new edict emerged from the Vince McMahon WWE circle during his final year in charge of WWE, which made sure that WWE stars could not use names that they had used prior to arriving to WWE, or to use their real names.
This led to sudden changes like WALTER becoming Gunther, Pete Dunne becoming Butch, Raul Mendoza becoming Cruz Del Toro and many more, you can see the full list of WWE name changes in 2022 here.
One of the other stars hit by this edict was Austin Theory, who was renamed to simply ‘Theory’ to fall in line with the new edict.
Since McMahon’s retirement, various edicts from Vince McMahon have been removed, such as Drew Gulak confirming that Triple H allowed him to stream on Twitch again.
Furthermore, Johnny Gargano returning to WWE under his real name seemed to confirm that the no former or real names edict was dead.
Interestingly, the man who Gargano superkicked on his return, Theory, may have also had his name reverted, as he is listed on advertising for upcoming WWE live events under the Austin Theory name.
While this could simply be an error in advertising, it could also indicate that he has gained his first name back, as SmackDown star Angel also teased recently that he was regaining his ‘Garza’ last name.
