Titus O’Neil has commented on the fact that he was never pushed at world championship level during his active time in WWE.
Despite not wrestling since November 2020, O’Neil is still with WWE in the role of Global Ambassador, which sees him doing a lot of charity work on behalf of the company.
During his time as an active wrestler, he won the WWE Tag Team Championship with Darren Young, but was never pushed to the next level as a singles talent.
Speaking with TMZ, he was asked for his thoughts why WWE never saw him at that next level. He replied:
“I couldn’t give you an answer to that. I never was in the writers’ room. To be honest with you, I’m more adamant about being a world title person and a world champion father and a world champion human being.
“I’ve seen people that have been world champions of our company that were not the greatest of human beings or the greatest of fathers either.
“So, I’ve never really got caught up on titles, I’ve always been caught up on character. I always tried to portray a character that could be entertaining, could be taken seriously, but also could not be afraid to make fun of themselves. It’s television, at the end of the day.
“I slid under the ring at the Greatest Royal Rumble and people ask me all the time, ‘Were you embarassed?’ And I’m like, for a brief second I was while I was under the ring, but then I got up and I kept going and kept it moving, and I wasn’t hurt.
“My house is paid off, my kids went to private school and high school, I don’t pay any money for any of them to go to college, I’m debt free, I’m stress free, so when I look at that, and I look at the fact that I can look at some of my former co-workers, and they’re not in the financial situation I’m in – I own three restaurants, I have 21 LED Volume studios, so from a business perspective – it is a business.
“So I’ve never kicked myself or wondered after the fact, ‘I should have been a world champion,’ or, ‘I should have been this.’ People that hold that onto themselves, that means that you got so consumed with what you didn’t get, that you’re not appreciative of what you did receive.
“I’ve never missed a paycheck, I got a chance to travel all over the world several times, I’m a million-miler in most airlines, and got a s**t-ton of points in hotel stays, etc.
“So, I’ve always been one to say, would I have love to have been a world champion? Absolutely. But I think I’ve been a world champion with the way I’ve represented this company since I’ve been there.
“So whether there was a gold title around my waist or a nice leather crocodile belt or a gator belt around my waist, I’m still a champion, because I know what type of human being I am.
“I think if people look at that in their everyday life – you don’t have to be termed the CEO to be doing CEO things. Because you can eventually work to that level or open up your own space, but you can’t get this mindset every time you get skipped over for a promotion or you get skipped over for an opportunity, you take it that personal that you don’t realize that you still have an opportunity to do something. And what you do with that opportunity is all on you.
“I’ve always been one to want to maximize every last opportunity that I got. So if they told me that I’ve got three minutes on TV, I’m gonna maximize those three minutes. If they tell me I have 15, I’m gonna maximize those 15. If they told me I wasn’t at TV, I wasn’t on the show, that’s okay, I’ll do a backstage segment, I’ll do something while I’m here that’s going to maximize my time.
“If you talk to anybody on the WWE roster, they will all echo the same sentiments about who Thaddeus Bullard is, Titus O’Neil or whatever, who he is as a man.
“There’s not a person on that roster past or present that could say that they ever had any beef with me. There’ll be people that might say some off the wall stuff here and there, but from a character standpoint, there’s nobody that can’t say, ‘Hey, if that dude told you he was gonna do something, he was gonna do it, and there was no ifs, ands or buts about it. If he said he was gonna be somewhere, he’s gonna be somewhere.’
“So if I told you I was gonna kick your ass, I’m gonna kick your ass, ain’t no ifs, ands or buts about it (laughs).”
