Tony Khan has named the match that he considers to be “maybe the greatest” in AEW since its inception in 2019.
The match in question took place at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door in June 2023 and saw Will Ospreay defeat Kenny Omega for the IWGP United States Championship.

With Ospreay and Omega in a somewhat uneasy alliance on AEW Dynamite, Tony Khan addressed both men’s history on the Battleground podcast where he would name their Forbidden Door match as “maybe the greatest”, saying:
“We’ve seen Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay clash, maybe the greatest match in the history of AEW was Kenny Omega versus Will Ospreay at Forbidden Door. So I’m incredibly excited about Omega returning to AEW and all the possibilities and everything.”
Kenny Omega returned to AEW Dynamite on the January 8, 2025, episode with Ospreay saving him from an attack by the Don Callis Family (Brian Cage, Lance Archer & Kyle Fletcher).
The January 22 episode of AEW Dynamite saw Omega and Ospreay once again united after a heated face-to-face between the pair was interrupted by the Don Callis family.
With all parties brawling, Omega and Ospreay would hit stereo dives before The Best Bout Machine challenged Fletcher and Konosuke Takeshita to a tag team match at AEW Grand Slam Australia on Saturday, February 15, 2025.
Omega’s absence throughout 2024 was due to a life-threatening bout of diverticulitis, with the AEW star returning to the ring for a match at Wrestle Dynasty against Gabe Kidd on January 5, 2025.
In the post-show press conference, Omega would reveal that he plans on “taking back everything he lost” in AEW during his absence.
