UPDATE: A top AEW star has officially issued a challenge for NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17. More at this link.
AEW President Tony Khan has commented on plans for AEW’s presence at the upcoming NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 event.
Wrestle Kingdom 17 will take place on January 4, 2023. NJPW Wrestle Kingdom events have taken place on January 4 every year since 2007, the year of the inaugural event.
With NJPW and AEW’s partnership, many are expecting AEW to have a noticeable presence on the upcoming show.
In an unfortunate turn of events for fans who wanted to see the Forbidden Door swing wide open, January 4 falls on a Wednesday next year.
This means that there will be an AEW Dynamite taping in the US on the same day as the NJPW Tokyo Dome show.
During the post-Full Gear media scrum, Tony Khan acknowledged this clash.
Khan noted that he’s optimistic that AEW will have some presence at Wrestle Kingdom 17, but confirmed that he won’t be sending his top AEW stars, as he’ll be keeping them for the AEW taping.
Recent reports have indicated that Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler of FTR are expected to be in action at the event. FTR currently hold the IWGP Tag Team Championship, which will be defended against the winners of the ongoing World Tag League tournament at Wrestle Kingdom 17.
AEW will hold a live episode of Dynamite at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington on January 4.
