AEW President Tony Khan has revealed that he believes CM Punk is currently the biggest star in pro-wrestling.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio before AEW Rampage, Khan discussed the show’s opening match, CM Punk vs Matt Sydal. Looking forward to the bout, Khan said:
“There’s no bigger star in all of pro wrestling right now than CM Punk. And I’m really excited about his match with Matt Sydal tonight.”
Punk notably made his AEW debut in August, making his first wrestling appearance since he left WWE in January 2014. Since returning to the ring at All Out on September 5, Punk has defeated Darby Allin, Powerhouse Hobbs, Daniel Garcia, and now Matt Sydal in singles action.
Punk’s match with Sydal ran directly against the final 30 minutes of SmackDown this week. The fast national ratings have emerged, indicating that the 18-49 demographic numbers will likely be close between Rampage and SmackDown.
The former WWE Champion is set to commentate on tonight’s (October 16) edition of AEW Dynamite.
