Tony Khan has confirmed plans for an upcoming AEW Battle of the Belts TV special.
On November 1, Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast, reported that AEW’s next TV special will air on January 8, 2022 on TNT. Zarian stated that as AEW is not able to use ‘Clash of the Champions’ as WWE owns the rights to the name, the event will instead be called ‘Battle of the Belts.
On the Full Gear media call, Tony Khan confirmed that there are plans for the event to take place early next year. Telling fans to stay tuned for more info about the special, Khan said:
“That same week when we launch Dynamite on TBS, we’ll have Rampage on TNT, and then we’ll have the first-ever Battle of the Belts in AEW. Stay tuned for more info on that. 2022, we’re going to start it in a very big way,”
As per Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the special will be around an hour long. These upcoming TNT quarterly specials are reportedly inspired by the old Clash of the Champions events, with the idea reportedly being to have pay-per-view level cards on TV.
Also in the media call, Khan indicated that Dynamite may receive a presentation change following the TBS move.
