Tony Khan Admits He Considered Major AEW Character Change AEW

Tony Khan has admitted that he considered a major AEW character change.

Since the inception of All Elite Wrestling, Tony Khan and the company’s management team have done a good job of listening to the fans in the arenas and on social media to get a better gauge of where to direct characters.

Ahead of AEW Full Gear 2022, long-time top heel MJF was getting some of the loudest cheers of anyone on the show. This led to many believing that he should turn babyface after defeating Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship.

However, Maxwell Jacob Friedman reaffirmed his villain status by getting help from William Regal to win the top prize in AEW. He then betrayed Regal to even further establish himself as the top heel of the promotion.

Speaking with the Los Angeles Times, AEW President Tony Khan admitted that he did consider changing MJF’s character. He said:

“I listen to the fans.”

“When the reactions were so massive, I had to at least think about [making MJF a good guy], but MJF is the world’s best young pro wrestler and one of the best pro wrestling heels of any age I’ve ever seen and I think his ability to antagonize the other wrestlers and the crowd is unparalleled.”

“AEW is at its strongest when MJF is at his worst as a villain.”

MJF picked up the biggest victory of his AEW World Championship reign when he defeated Bryan Danielson in a 60-minute Iron Man Match at AEW Revolution earlier this month.

Friedman now finds himself in a brewing rivalry with the other three pillars of All Elite Wrestling in Darby Allin, “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry and Sammy Guevara.
