Tony Khan has admitted that he considered stripping a current AEW champion of their title.
Much like the AEW TNT and World Championships before it, the AEW Women’s World Championship has been on the sidelines since Thunder Rosa has been out of action recovering from a back injury.
In her place, Toni Storm won a four-way match at All Out to become the AEW Interim Women’s World Champion.
Storm has since defended the title against Athena, Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D., Serena Deeb and Hikaru Shida.
Speaking on the AEW Full Gear media call on November 17, Tony Khan was asked whether Thunder Rosa could relinquish her share of the title if she continues to be on the shelf.
Khan said:
“It’s something we have considered. It’s something to consider. I’m still weighing the pros and cons. Thunder Rosa’s a great wrestler, and it’s unfortunate that she’s injured. It’s kept her out a long time.”
“It’s not an easy situation, and I try to take everything on a case-by-case basis, and am trying to give Thunder Rosa every opportunity to come back and defend the championship. But eventually, you would have to crown a lineal champion.”
As previously reported, AEW Women’s World Champion Thunder Rosa provided a positive update on her recovery from the back injury earlier this week.
Toni Storm will defend the AEW Interim Women’s World Championship against Jamie Hayter at this Saturday’s Full Gear pay-per-view. For the full lineup for the event, click here.
