With WWE still potentially in the middle of their unofficial hiring freeze, AEW have certainly seemed to have the upper-hand in the free agent market thus far in 2023.
Having already snapped up perhaps the year’s most sought after unattached name in ‘Switchblade’ Jay White, despite reported WWE interest, AEW have also announced that Aussie Open (Mark Davis & Kyle Fletcher) are now officially All Elite.
However according to a new report from Fightful Select (subscription required), a significant gesture was made by AEW President Tony Khan before Aussie Open officially joined the promotion.
According to the report Mark Davis recently underwent surgery for a meniscus tear and it was Tony Khan who fronted the bill, despite the team not being signed to the company by that point.
In the same report, it was revealed that prior to signing to AEW, Fletcher and Davis also had “supporters” in WWE and even retained a representative for any negotiations, however, perhaps in part to WWE’s ongoing hiring freeze as well as AEW’s interest, the team obviously chose to become All Elite instead.
The former IWGP Tag Team Champions and NJPW STRONG Openweight Tag Champions were recently forced to relinquish both their sets of titles at the recent NJPW STRONG Resurgence event on May 21 due to Davis’ injury.
However, we did recently get to see Kyle Fletcher in action on this week’s Dynamite where he took on Orange Cassidy for the AEW International Championship in a losing effort.
The card for the AEW Double Or Nothing event on Sunday, May 28 is as follows:
AEW World Championship – MJF (c) vs. Darby Allin vs. Jack Perry vs. Sammy Guevara
TNT Championship Ladder Match – Wardlow (c) vs. Christian Cage
AEW Women’s World Championship – Jamie Hayter (c) vs. Toni Storm
