Tony Khan Reiterates He Doesn’t Want To Be On-Screen Character

AEW President and CEO Tony Khan has reiterated that he doesn’t want to be an on-screen authority figure character.

Although Khan has made appearances during Dark, after shows, and things like that, he’s never been on-screen during an episode of Dynamite or Rampage (other than when the camera happens to spot him backstage during some kind of angle), and that’s something he wants to continue.

While he hasn’t appeared on TV, he is constantly referred to by the announcers and talent as the GM of the show, just to make it clear there is an authority in place even if viewers don’t see him.

Speaking with Bloomberg Business of Sports, Tony Khan said:

“No, I don’t write myself as a TV character, but if this makes sense, I am a plot device in the show. So, you’ll hear my name a few times because I am the matchmaker. I make the matches, so you’ll have somebody appeal to me. I don’t need to act or be on television or take up the TV time, but you do have to have a commissioner and a person who lays the law down and makes the rules.”

During the same appearance, Khan also spoke about AEW’s fanbase, saying he believes the audience is “more affluent than other wrestling organisations”. You can read more about that at this link.
