Tony Khan has responded to the criticism of the Interim AEW World Championship.

On last Friday’s Rampage, CM Punk announced that he had a broken foot that required surgery. Punk said he offered to relinquish the AEW World Title, but Tony Khan wouldn’t let him.

All Elite Wrestling will instead crown an Interim AEW World Champion at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door on June 26.

Speaking with Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan spoke about the decision to crown an Interim AEW World Champion.

He said:

“Based on what happens in real fights, in the world of fighting, this is what you do. You have a great champion, and if they are injured, you name an interim champion and set up an exciting unification fight. We have a great chance to set something exciting up.”

The company held a Casino Battle Royale to open last night’s AEW Dynamite with Kyle O’Reilly being victorious. O’Reilly went on to the main event where he lost to Jon Moxley.

Moxley will now face the winner of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Hirooki Goto at this Sunday’s NJPW Dominion event at Forbidden Door at Chicago’s United Center.
