AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door is this weekend, and there are countless huge names from both companies’ rosters, but original plans would have seen a number of different names on the card.
AEW has suffered from a string of high profile injuries of late, with Kenny Omega, CM Punk and Bryan Danielson all set to miss the show with various ailments.
Speaking during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, AEW President Tony Khan discussed the changes that were forced upon him by these injuries. He said:
“CM Punk got injured. AEW had to find a new main event now that the original plan of Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. CM Punk could no longer go forward.”
He continued by saying Jon Moxley vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi was the “obvious” match to replace Punk vs. Tanahashi, and called it a dream match fans have been calling for, for years. He added he is very excited to see Punk take on Tanahashi in the future.
Khan said he had a lot of plans for the initially planned match.
“I had a lot of plans leading into it, and I think that would’ve been great. And the TV was ready to go, we had a lot of great matches planned in the weeks leading into Forbidden Door.”
