There is always more to learn when you are in the wrestling business. This is especially true for a rookie booker. Tony Khan may have been inexperienced, but he has had great success since the launch of AEW.
In his recent interview with F4WOnline.com, Tony Khan was asked what the biggest lessons were that he had learned. He first went into detail about getting ideas and figuring out what fans wanted most. Here is the quote:
“At some point I needed to come up with a lot more ideas than my own and do them and stick to them. I’d had ideas and it was more big picture stuff and as we went on something that I found about writing television that I believed from the beginning but if I ever doubted myself I doubled down on it as we got going, is that wrestling fans want to see great wrestling matches.
There are times like on the All Out go-home show, there probably wasn’t enough wrestling. There was enough to get away with but I came out the day after the show and said ‘you know what? I feel like I got away with one. I’m gonna be honest with you guys. I would have put more wrestling on the show. I’ll do a better job next time.’ So last night I felt really good because I felt the go-home show for Full Gear was better than the go-home show for All Out.”
Khan then transitioned and talked about his biggest takeaway from the last two years. In short, he needed to trust himself.
“My biggest lasting takeaway has been sticking to my guns. There’s stuff that I thought might not be good and I feel like we’ve batted a really high average, nobody is going to bat 1.000, some of the ones where we struck out may have been some of the ones I had a bad feeling about going in. And so going into 2020 I promised myself I would trust myself and trust my instincts more and I haven’t always been right about that stuff but generally, if you have a bad feeling about something you probably shouldn’t do it.”
Khan also mentioned that he has found it challenging to utilize his whole roster.
