AEW President Tony Khan has now responded to WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H’s comments about AEW being a ‘secondary promotion’.
The new Cody Rhodes Peacock documentary touches on Rhodes’ run outside WWE, which involved co-founding All Elite Wrestling in 2019.
During the documentary Triple H made some interesting comments about Rhodes’ decision to leave AEW in February 2022 and rejoin WWE that April, noting:
“It’s to take that gamble again and say ‘This is not what I wanted to be.
“I didn’t grow up dreaming of being the champion or the face of a secondary promotion.'”
Speaking with the Orlando Sentinel, Tony Khan stated that WWE has been secondary to AEW in several markets, including UK TV viewership, also mentioning the success of All In at Wembley Stadium.
AEW is carried by ITV in the UK, usually airing on ITV4, whereas WWE airs on TNT Sports (formerly BT Sport) which requires a subscription.
Khan said:
“We certainly won’t be the secondary promotion at All In. We’re No. 1 in the UK, on TV and with a record gate.
“I have a lot of respect for Cody. I know these weren’t his words, to be fair, but we’re not secondary in a lot of markets — for the first time in a long time, WWE has been secondary in a lot of markets….
“I’m proud of where we’re at and we’re not taking a back seat to anybody.”
AEW is currently building to All In, a huge stadium show set to take place in London’s Wembley Stadium on August 27.
With over 75,000 tickets distributed for the event, the event will easily become AEW’s most attended event ever, with the current record held by the Grand Slam 2021 taping which seated 20,177 individuals.
