The Cody Rhodes story is one of the biggest stories in wrestling so far in 2022, with him shockingly leaving AEW earlier this year.
AEW president Tony Khan has spoken publicly about Cody (and Brandi)’s departure from the company, with the two sides speaking highly of each other.
Cody’s contract expiring came as a surprise, with many people believing that AEW would roll over Cody’s contract, which had an option to add on another year, which the contracts for the Young Bucks and Chris Jericho had picked up.
Tony Khan spoke on a media call today ahead of tonight’s AEW Dynamite, where he admitted that he tried to reach a longer agreement with Cody beyond the one year option, but they couldn’t come to terms on the contract.
Khan then admitted that, once they couldn’t come to terms on a new deal, it became clear that Cody was leaving AEW.
Tony Khan tells Jason Powell he tried to reach a longer agreement beyond the option years with Cody Rhodes. At one point it seemed like it was going to happen, but when they didn't come to terms on that, it became clear Cody was leaving AEW
