Top AEW Star Talks Contact With WWE

One of the biggest success stories of AEW thus far as been Hangman Adam Page. Fans turned on Page when he was inserted into the World Title picture at All Out last year, a spot that fans didn’t think he was ready for.

However, Page has turned things around and become one of the most interesting and loveable characters in wrestling. His absence during the Coronavirus pandemic was felt hard by AEW and those watching at home.

On the latest AEW Unrestricted Podcast, Hangman Page has opened up to Aubrey Edwards and Tony Schiavone about his first contact with WWE when he was 17-years-old.

For those that don’t know, Page was reportedly offered a huge deal by WWE to join NXT prior to the launch of AEW. In case it wasn’t clear, Page rejected the offer and is now one of AEW’s biggest stars.

Back to Page’s first contact with WWE in 2008/2009, here’s what the current AEW World Tag Team Champion had to say on the matter:

“I never went to any of the tryout camps. It might have been like my first year of college maybe or maybe even the summer before I went to college, I guess I was 17, there was a guy somewhere in Western North Carolina who apparently owned the trademark or copyright to NXT before they started NXT. This is the story that I understand.

“So in a trade for that copyright or trademark or whatever it is, they sent it might have been Johnny Ace I think – down to his place to have him look at people for the day, and he talked. And he did genuinely watch some of these matches. So that was my like first contact with them, and then I got put into their big database of local guys, a lot of like the little local extra stuff, but I never really had a proper tryout I guess.”

I’m sure Page is happy with the decision he made because, as previously mentioned, he is killing it in AEW right now.

Speaking of big AEW stars, it has emerged that Chris Jericho wanted someone within the promotion to join the Inner Circle, but the idea was shut down by Tony Khan. You can find out who by clicking here.
