Top AEW Star Thought He’d Retire In Japan

A top AEW star has opened up about his decision to leave Japan, admitting that he thought he’d retire in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Kenny Omega spent a large portion of his career wrestling in Japan for the likes of NJPW and DDT Pro. The current AEW World Champion has noted that he never thought he’d be a full-time wrestler in the USA at this stage of his career.

Speaking on Wrestling with the Week, Omega stated that he was heavily considering living in Japan for the rest of his life. Claiming that he couldn’t have predicted AEW or the pandemic, Omega noted that he’s taking things (and title belts) as they come.

Here is the full quote:

“If you would have asked me how I would see myself years from now, I never would have said, ‘I’m going to be a full-time wrestler in America.’ I thought for sure I was going to retire in Japan and I was heavily leaning towards just living in Japan for the rest of my days.

“Of course, I’d maybe do the odd thing in America because we were trying to do a crossover anyway. It’s really surprising and goes to show that you can’t plan for these things. You can’t plan for this phenomenon that is AEW or the pandemic, but we’re rolling with the punches and I’m rolling with all these belt reigns.”

Omega currently holds the AEW World, IMPACT World and AAA Mega Championships. He will defend his AEW gold at Double or Nothing at the end of the month.

At Against All Odds in June, Moose will challenge Omega for his IMPACT World Championship. Moose recently revealed that his future is up in the air, with his IMPACT contract expiring next month.

Andrade will challenge Omega for his AAA gold at TripleMania. The triple-champ has discussed the pros and cons of holding multiple world titles.
