Top AEW Stars Opposed To Trios Tag Team Championships

A few months ago, rumours began circulating online that on Chris Jericho’s third cruise in 2021, AEW was going to start a tournament to crown their first-ever six-man tag team champions.

Many were fond of the idea. Due to the depth of AEW’s tag division, teams like Jurassic Express, Best Friends and Private Party aren’t likely to hold regular tag gold, so this could allow teams like that the chance to shine.

While many fans may be on board with the idea, a top AEW tag team revealed in an interview with Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful that they don’t want the six-man titles to be introduced right now.

Prior to the interview dropping onto YouTube, Sean Ross Sapp revealed on Fightful Select (subscription required) that FTR told him during an interview that they don’t want the belts at the moment:

“The depth of AEW’s tag team division has many fans questioning whether or not the company should institute six-man tag team titles. However, FTR tell me that they don’t want that right now, as they’d consider it trying tot run before they could walk. They weren’t opposed to it once the division becomes established down the line.”

When asked about who they’d like to team with if a trios division was introduced, FTR namedropped Chris Jericho and MJF as potential partners:

“FTR mentioned Chris Jericho as a name they’d love to have in their six-man, but noted that he is already doing his own thing. Of those that aren’t in a stable, they both mentioned MJF as matching up with them from a mental and philosophy standpoint, and they’ve gotten along well backstage.”
