A new report has provided an update on Mercedes Mone’s injury and her NJPW Resurgence title match.
At NJPW Resurgence, Willow Nightingale defeated Mercedes Mone to become the first NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion. During the bout, Mone suffered an ankle injury before the finish.
Fightful Select (subscription required) has provided an update, noting that Mercedes Mone was slated to win the title prior to her injury at Resurgence.
The report notes that Mone herself called for the end of the match and called an audible on the finish when she realized something went wrong physically, at that time only known to be a leg/foot injury.
Also, the NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion was created with Mercedes in mind.
New Japan Pro Wrestling is under the impression that the injury to Mone was a severe sprain without a break, but those close to Mercedes have said that there’s definitely a sprain and the fear of a break.
There was too much swelling at the time of the injury to know for sure, and they are hoping to have a clearer picture of what the injury is when the swelling goes down.
As previously reported, Mercedes Mone was called out by a top AEW star during the Double Or Nothing media scrum following the pay-per-view.
