Update On Jeff Cobb’s AEW Status and ROH/AEW Relationship

Jeff Cobb debuted last night [2/12/20] on AEW: Dynamite. Cobb attacked Jon Moxley at the end of the show and stood tall with Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle.

Some were unclear on whether or not Cobb is now a full-fledged member of AEW’s roster. Cobb has been working for ROH and New Japan recently.

Over the past weekend, he and Dan Maff defeated Jay Lethal and Jonathan Gresham in a proving ground match to earn a shot at the ROH World Tag Team Championships.  As a result, Cobb has been advertised for upcoming ROH shows.

Many wondered if Cobb had left ROH high and dry. Others wondered if this would be a sign of ROH and AEW or AEW and NJPW working together.

According to Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, none of those things are true. Apparently, Cobb is truly a free agent.

He is appearing for ROH on a per appearance basis. In addition, he has only signed on to AEW for the Jon Moxley program.

Allegedly, Cody has offered Cobb a full-time deal. However, Cobb’s goal is to work as many dates for NJPW as possible.

Meltzer points to the fact that AEW used footage from All Pro Wrestling to make Cobbs highlight reel as a sign that there is no relationship between ROH and AEW.  If there was, then AEW would have access to the ROH footage.

Meltzer doesn’t speculate how long Cobb is actually signed for. It appears he may actually just be a hired gun to face Moxley next week.
