A few weeks ago, WrestleTalk’s Louis Dangoor reported that Randy Orton had been pitching to work with NXT stars at SummerSlam, most notably Tommaso Ciampa and NXT Champion Adam Cole.
This comes after Randy Orton’s original planned SummerSlam opponent, Edge, was ruled out of the show with a torn triceps following the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” at Backlash.
In that initial article, we reported that due to Raw’s shortage of top heels, it was always a possibility that WWE could decide that Orton was needed to feud with a fellow main roster star, and it appears like this is going to happen.
WrestleTalk’s sources have told us that while Orton has been pitching to work with NXT stars, the likely plan, as of right now, for him at SummerSlam is to feud with WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.
While the idea of Orton taking on one of NXT’s best was an attractive prospect, Raw just doesn’t have enough top heels at the moment, and we’ve heard that Randy will almost certainly be fighting for the WWE Championship on the show.
A few weeks ago, I reported that Randy Orton had been pitching to work with members of the NXT roster at SummerSlam, most notably Adam Cole & Tommaso Ciampa.
However, I've been told that due to the shortage of #WWERaw heels, Randy Orton will likely be facing Drew McIntyre.

We’ve also been told by our sources that just because Orton vs. Cole/Ciampa likely won’t be happening at SummerSlam, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t something WWE could come back to at a later date.
Our initial report has since been corroborated by Alex McCarthy, who notes that he was also told that Orton was pushing for a match with Ciampa or Cole at SummerSlam after hearing about Edge’s injury.
In fairness, I was also told Orton’s immediate thoughts after learning Edge was injured was to pivot to either Adam Cole or Tommaso Ciampa at SummerSlam.
Not sure on current plans, but common sense says Randy is top heel/best matchup for Drew. https://t.co/YDxEkxr1zE
