Update On Plans To Have WWE Hall Of Famer Win 2021 Royal Rumble

Dave Meltzer reported several months ago that the plan for the main event of WrestleMania 37 saw Randy Orton defending the WWE Champion against long-time rival Edge in a I Quit match.

Many people speculated that this would see Edge returning at the Royal Rumble in 2021, one year after he returned to the ring for the first time in eleven years, winning the marquee match to set up his clash with Orton at ‘Mania 37.

Edge recently noted in an interview that his recovery was taking longer than he expected it to. This potentially put the former WWE Champion’s return at the 2021 Royal Rumble in question.

However, Dave Meltzer has noted in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that while a return at the Rumble is “touch and go”,  Edge should still be fine to wrestle by WrestleMania next April:

Adam Copeland (Edge) said this past week that his recovery from triceps surgery is going slower than he expected, thinking it may be due to his being 47 years old. Copeland had surgery in June, and that’s usually a six to eight month return. Even at eight months, that’s February. If Orton was champion and if Orton vs. Edge would be the direction (a few months back Orton vs. Edge in an I Quit match was the planned Mania main event, but things changed several times), an Edge return winning the Rumble could make sense and January would be touch and go. Even with a slower return, Mania would still appear to be well within probable reach.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Randy Orton vs. Edge is still the plan for WrestleMania 37, but this report certainly makes Orton and Drew McIntyre’s Hell in a Cell match later this month incredibly interesting.
