Update On ‘Talks Behind-The-Scenes’ Of The Rock Returning At WWE Royal Rumble 2023 WWE

An update has emerged on rumors of The Rock making a WWE return at the upcoming Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

Marking the beginning of the road to WrestleMania 39, and the first Royal Rumble event booked under the Triple H regime, the January 28, 2023 premium live event is already highly anticipated.

WWE recently confirmed that the event has broken the record for the largest gate for a Royal Rumble event in company history.

With so many eyes already on the upcoming show, many have speculated that some big names will make their returns at the event.

Following reports that The Rock’s in-ring return is pencilled in for WrestleMania 39, there were rumors that the Hollywood star will first make an appearance at Royal Rumble 2023.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer gave an update on the situation, noting that the idea has been discussed.

Noting that nothing was official as of writing, Meltzer wrote:

“The idea was being talked about behind-the-scenes, but as best we can tell while rumors certainly exist within the company, as far as those who would be in a position to know, there is no real answer.

“If Johnson wants to do it and can be sold on the idea, it would be the most perfect scenario for the company.

“The only thing we were told is that the close to finalized plans for the WrestleMania main event need to be locked in by mid-January and whatever involvement Johnson wishes to do and has time to do they would like to be finalized by that date.

“Originally the belief was that if his schedule allowed for it, Johnson would do likely his last match at Mania with Reigns, who is a family member.

“This has been talked about for years and Johnson wanted it in Los Angeles if he could do it.

“There was talk of it regarding Dallas last year but Johnson was more interested in Los Angeles, so they went with Brock Lesnar.

“The idea we heard regarding a discussion and nothing more, like I said, it’s been talked about as a pie-in-the-sky is a surprise No. 30 entrant and winning.

“It could be something only a few people know but as best we can tell there is nothing official to it right now past a rumor.”

Previous reports indicated that the belief was that The Rock will headline the April 2-3 event against Roman Reigns, if his schedule allows him to train for an in-ring return.

Excluding the 6-second bout against Erick Rowan (Redbeard) at WrestleMania 32 in 2016, The Rock hasn’t wrestled a full bout since dropping the WWE Championship to John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 29 in 2013.
