An update has emerged on whether Vince McMahon returning to WWE could affect plans for the Rock to make his own comeback for WrestleMania.

For what seems like an eternity, the idea has been The Rock vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania Goes Hollywood (WrestleMania 39) this coming April, but it’s all dependent on whether The Rock can fit it into his schedule.

However, more recently, there have been even more question marks as to whether The Rock would want his name associated with the current happenings and controversies going on with WWE.

Dave Meltzer addressed this on Wrestling Observer Radio today, saying that McMahon’s return will have “no impact whatsoever” on The Rock’s decision to come back.

The one thing Meltzer said might change The Rock’s mind would be if WWE was sold to Saudi Arabia, but that’s unlikely to happen until after WrestleMania anyway.

Meltzer explained:

“The basic thing is that Dwayne Johnson is going to do what he has the time to do. If he has time, the Vince stuff is going to have no impact whatsoever. He’s going to do it if he feels he can do it well and he has time to train for it. Which he may not because of the XFL.

“The Vince thing will have no impact. A sale to Saudi Arabia is a different story but that’s not gonna happen before WrestleMania anyway most likely. Vince coming back, is it going to affect John Cena? Is it going to affect The Rock? No, they’re going to do whatever they were going to do before.

“They expect John Cena at WrestleMania, and as far as The Rock goes, it just depends on his schedule. I would say we’re within two weeks of a yes or no on that one, because they’ve got to have their answer by Royal Rumble because they’ve got to know what to do at the Rumble.

“I don’t know what his answer is. I look at the schedule, he’s got to promote this XFL, I don’t know that him doing WrestleMania promotes the XFL.

“But if he’s got time to get in shape for the match and train for the match, he’ll do it, and if he doesn’t, I don’t believe he’ll go there to be out of condition and have a bad match.”

If The Rock can’t make WrestleMania, the most likely option to replace him as Roman Reigns’ opponent looks to be Cody Rhodes, but other names speculated include Seth Rollins or some combination of Kevin Owens and/or Sami Zayn.

For Cena, it’s believed his opponent will be either Austin Theory or Logan Paul.

It’s being reported the past couple of days that Vince McMahon has returned to his office and has been “suggesting changes” to different departments.

There’s even a “feeling” among people in WWE that he could make a return to TV at some point soon.

Paul Levesque (Triple H) told WWE talent in a meeting before SmackDown on Friday that nothing would change on the creative side of things and he would still be the person heading that up.

He did say he and McMahon “may have discussions”, but Levesque is the one making final decisions.

However, it’s worth remembering that WWE did hold a meeting with employees (not talent) a week earlier and the message was “business as usual” and that no management would be changing, and then Stephanie McMahon resigned just days later, so it seems even what’s being said in the meetings is a fluid situation and things may change.

On January 6, using his power as majority owner, Vince McMahon put himself and former WWE presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson back on the company’s Board of Directors, disposing of JoEllen Lyons Dillon, Jeffrey R Speed, and Alan M Wexler in the process.

McMahon had stated that his intention was to facilitate a sale of the company.

He changed bylaws to ensure that no sale or media rights deal could be completed without his approval.

Upon McMahon’s return, two further Board members resigned of their own volition, those being Man Jit Singh – who was the one heading up the Board’s investigation into McMahon – and Ignace Lahoud.

Stephanie McMahon then resigned from her role as co-CEO and Chairwoman and her position on the Board on January 10, as Vince McMahon was elected Executive Chairman.

There has been much speculation that Vince McMahon was looking to sell to a party that would commit to keeping him in charge of the company despite the multiple sexual assault allegations that have surfaced in the past year that led to his initial ‘retirement’ in July.
