“Velveteen Dream’s gonna make it” – Dave Meltzer exclusive WrestleTalk interview

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s founder, editor, and publisher Dave Meltzer sat down with WrestleTalk’s own Jamal Niaz at Wrestling MediaCon. Meltzer discussed many hot topics in the world of professional wrestling.

With the success of the All In pay-per-view Meltzer had this to say when asked about the possibility of there being more All In shows and Cody, the Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega going to WWE:

“There’s a million different variables, it’s impossible to say. If they don’t go to WWE there will obviously be another one. I don’t know how many they can do a year. You’ve got to consider the possibility (of going to WWE) Vince has all the money in the world. I can’t speak for them. I know the decisions they’re making and I know they want to stick together as a group. We’ll see what happens, but they would have to consider it. This (All In) shows that they have a venue. There’s reasons that they don’t have to go; they never had to go.

“If they go to WWE with the right angle, I mean they could be in the hottest angle in years and years cause you go to WWE there’s Bullet Club shirts everywhere. It’s a ready-made big angle.”

Meltzer said that Samoa Joe and AJ Styles have the hottest feud in WWE right now, but he is unsure where Styles and Joe go after the feud ends:

“The AJ Styles and Samoa Joe feud is the hottest on the main roster now because Joe is doing a great job. He could get it (The WWE Chmpionship) I don’t think it’s a lock I thought Nakamura was going to win the title and he didn’t, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with Joe, to prolong the program Joe should win.

“After Joe who do you have? Randy Orton? It could be Randy Orton/AJ Styles… They haven’t done the big program, and that’s a good program for Randy Orton because I think Randy Orton is gonna have some of his best matches in a long, long time with AJ. Randy needs someone to get him out of second gear sometimes.”

Meltzer said that sometimes Vince McMahon perceives people in a certain way, and doesn’t give the chance to showcase their abilities. Of future NXT call ups such as Velveteen Dream Meltzer said:

“The thing with Velveteen Dream is Velveteen Dream’s gonna make it because he’s so young and already so good at this level. If Vince doesn’t see it now, in 3 years he’s only going to get better. I hate to say I’m confident he’s going to make it because sometimes like Bobby Roode, even with Nakamura, it wasn’t as strong as I expected. Of the guys that we talk about like Gargano, Ciampa, all of those guys. Of those guys Velveteen Dream is the one that I would have the most confidence in the long run is gonna make it, he’s got the size he’s got the promo ability. I’m pretty confident that even if they don’t get it right away, they’re going to get it.”

Meltzer gave Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada’s match at NJPW Dominion a 7 star rating, the highest ever given. It is clearly Meltzer’s match of the year thus far. When asked what he thought WWE’s match of the year is Meltzer had a much harder time picking one:

“In NXT I would go with Almas/Gargano or Gargano/Ciampa, but on the main roster they’ve had a lot of good one’s but nothing has killed. (AJ Styles vs Joe at Summerslam) was good, but it felt like the prelude to the match of the year. And they could do it. The Ronda Rousey match at WrestleMania was exceptional, it really was. That’s not too far off. I’d like to think that there is one match that I’m not thinking of.

“The problem I think is this year between NXT and New Japan There have been so many fantastic matches that nothing on the main roster that’s come close to those matches, so it’s like I don’t think of anything when you ask me. There’s like 10 matches in Japan that I come up with right away and there’s a couple in NXT. Nothing on the main roster has been at that level.”
