A new report indicates that Vince McMahon actively wanted to bury one of Paul Levesque’s (Triple H’s) favorite WWE talents.
One man who has shone during the Levesque era so far is GUNTHER, who has reigned as Intercontinental Champion since June 10.
GUNTHER’s win/loss record since his move to the main roster in April is an impressive 13-1, with his only loss being a no DQ six-man tag match in which he wasn’t the man pinned, but things may have played out very differently if Vince McMahon was still running things.
In an interview with GiveMeSport, WrestleVotes said:
“I know that Vince McMahon just didn’t like what he saw on Raw (on July 4 in a segment with R-Truth) and was over him, like legitimately wanted to bury him, go back to NXT, that type of stuff.”
Good news though, because Levesque is very much of the opposite opinion. WrestleVotes added:
“Gunther is going to be around for a long time. He’s got real potential as a heel, and he’s going be here for 10/12 years. He’s going to open some shows, he’s going to close some shows, but he’s just going to be a solid match every night. That’s what Hunters sees in him right now.
“Hunter likes him and he’s going to give him a shot. People are starting to understand what he is and the Clash at the Castle deal with Sheamus helped.”
GUNTHER will next defend the Intercontinental Title against the winner of the currently ongoing SmackDown World Cup.
The first two semi-finalists in the SmackDown World Cup are Braun Strowman and Santos Escobar, who beat Jinder Mahal and Shinsuke Nakamura resptively in the quarter-finals.
The other quarter-finals, which will take place on the November 18 SmackDown, are Sami Zayn vs Butch, and Mustafa Ali vs Ricochet.
Rey Mysterio, who was GUNTHER’s last opponent, was originally set to be part of the SmackDown World Cup, but had to be pulled out due to injury and replaced by Ali.
Here’s the segment with R-Truth that reportedly led to Vince wanting to bury GUNTHER:
