I imagine that when you join WWE, there’s a mix of excitement and fear, as you don’t really know whether you’re going to be a success, or spend 5 years not having matches.
While he may be Luke Owen’s favourite wrestler of all-time, hardcore legend Raven never got the spotlight many felt he deserved after joining WWE, following a successful run in both WCW and ECW.
Raven recently spoke to Title Match Wrestling about his time in WWE, and he revealed that it was a conversation with Michael Hayes that indicated to him that he wouldn’t be used properly in the promotion.
“I was plenty sober when I got back [to the WWE], and I thought it was my time — but it wasn’t.
“The locker room was so set that if you’re not a WWE guy, you haven’t done anything.” In other words, none of Raven’s accolades in ECW and WCW mattered. “I think they didn’t want to use me [in a prominent role].
“Michael Hayes said that he was in a booking meeting when Vince said, ‘Who the F hired Raven?’
“The way Hayes intimated it was that Vince was like, ‘What the fuck are we hiring him for?’”
Raven explained that while it wasn’t a nice thing to hear, it never shook his confidence, even though his heart was broken when he heard he wasn’t going to be used properly.
“Nothing shook my confidence,” he admits. “I was too arrogant – look, I knew I had the goods. I really believed that. But my heart was already broken when I realized I wasn’t going to be used right.”
Don’t worry, Raven. You’re still Luke’s favourite.
